Bluepalm in 3 minutes flat. Edited for the NEA, the tape provides
a quick overview of our methods to place art at the center of learning.
Bluepalm and Montebello Unified School District
(MUSD) have entered into a partnership to bring cross-curricular
arts-integration to 25 classrooms at three elementary sites -Washington,
Gascon, and Bell Gardens. Coordinated under the stewardship of MUSD
Arts Coordinator Leonard Narumi, the long-term goal of the program
is to design curriculum K-5 which integrates the arts with other
core content areas. In Phase One, Bluepalm offers a model program
to link Dance, Theater, and Language Arts at the Kindergarten level.
The project is aligned with Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s
‘Arts For All’ program and receives matching support
from the MUSD. Bluepalm and Arts For L.A. are working together to
build community understanding of the critical role the arts play
in shaping 21st century skills – rigor, metacognition, teamwork.

The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded
Bluepalm a grant (2010-2011) for its Charter Arts Initiative (CAI).
Now in is fourth year, CAI leverages the curricular flexibility
of the publicly funded, independently run sites to design model
programs which can be rolled out to other charters or traditional
sites.
Tom Crocker recently spent the day at the USC
Keck Hospital with Bluepalm Advisory Board member Dr. Neil Kaplowitz
to explore shared spaces between science and the arts.
To address the drastic state cuts in education and the arts, Bluepalm
is increasing its investment in research, advocacy, and community
building.

Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s
Roundtable Advisory Board
The Los Angeles County Arts Commission has invited Bluepalm to serve
on its Rountable Discussion advisory board: these regular, countywide
meetings help shape dialogue within the field of arts education.
Community Actions
Jackie Planeix and Tom Crocker offer instruction in dance and theater
to children and adults in the Silver Lake/Los Feliz community. Besides
the joy and rigor these classes bring, they also permit Tom and
Jackie to observe the physical and intellectual development of arts
training across ages and cultures. These findings inform the work
Bluepalm accomplishes in school settings across the county with
students and teachers. Our community students attend a large cross-section
of schools, including the Los Angeles County High School for the
Arts, the new LAUSD High School for the Arts, RenArts, Los Feliz
Arts Charter, and the Lycée International de Los Angeles.
Even Bluepalm board members participate in adult dance classes!

bilingual French/English adaptation of Ionesco's 'The Chairs' and
Jean-Paul Sartre's 'No Exit' recently received a standing ovation
at Silverlake's Lyric Hyperion Theater. Ms. Planeix's group of Los
Angeles teens - Les Illustres Comédiens - seamlessly navigated
the pairing of post-war, existential classics with sophistication
and brio, in English and in French. Bravo les artistes! Vive
les arts dans l'éducation!
The ever valiant Arts Council continues to support our efforts to
provide equal access to the arts for all Los Angeles County youth
K-12. CAC assistance will help us build on already accomplished
work, providing professional development in cross-curricular arts
integration at four underserved sites. Lead teachers are identified
at each of the sites to sustain and further develop program results.
With CAC support, Bluepalm tools and techniques help teachers put
art at the center of learning, meaningfully engage different learning
styles, and anchor knowledge with personal and kinesthetic connections.

A two-year grant (2009 - 2011) will provide salary support for our
Artistic and Executive Directors. This is a timely grant as it will
permit our directors to help coordinate countywide advocacy efforts
for community arts providers while assuring ongoing operations.

Bluepalm company directors Jackie Planeix and
Tom Crocker met with directors of two principal players in the French
arts scene – ANRAT, the national theater education association
and Maguy Marin, director of the National Choreographic Center in
Rilleux-La-Pape (outside Lyon), which features a company, school,
and outreach program. Discussions focused on the challenges facing
arts education in France and in the United States as well as strategies
for collaboration and advocacy.
